Understanding Camera Settings

Modern cameras offer extensive control over exposure, colour, and capture settings. Shutter speed determines motion blur: a fast shutter (1/1000s or faster) freezes action, while a slow shutter (1/30s or slower) introduces intentional blur. The minimum handheld shutter speed to avoid camera shake is approximately 1/(focal length), though image stabilisation can extend this by 2-5 stops.

ISO sensitivity amplifies the sensor signal. Lower ISO values (100-400) produce cleaner images with less noise, while higher values (1600-12800+) allow shooting in darker conditions at the cost of increased grain. Modern mirrorless cameras typically deliver usable results up to ISO 6400 or higher, depending on the sensor size and generation.

White balance adjusts colour rendering to match the light source. Daylight is approximately 5500K, tungsten bulbs around 3200K, and overcast skies around 6500K. Mired (micro reciprocal degrees) provides a perceptually uniform scale for comparing colour temperature shifts, which is especially useful when combining colour correction filters.

Understanding your camera's buffer depth, write speed, and storage capacity is essential for action and event photography where you cannot afford to miss a moment. Our calculators help you plan your settings and storage before the shoot begins.
