Understanding Print Quality and Display
The relationship between image resolution and print size is governed by DPI (dots per inch). For high-quality photographic prints, 300 DPI is the standard. At this resolution, individual pixels are invisible at normal viewing distances. A 24-megapixel image (6000×4000 pixels) can produce a 50.8×33.9 cm print at 300 DPI, or a larger print at lower DPI for wall-display viewing distances.
Aspect ratio determines the proportions of your print. Common camera ratios are 3:2 (most DSLRs and mirrorless), 4:3 (Micro Four Thirds, smartphones), and 16:9 (video). Standard UK print sizes like 6×4 inches match 3:2, but sizes like 7×5 or 10×8 require cropping. Understanding these ratios prevents unexpected loss of subject matter when ordering prints.
Canvas prints typically require 25-38mm of extra image on each side for the gallery wrap around the stretcher bars. Mat boards add a border between the print and frame, with standard openings cut 3mm smaller than the print on each side to hold it in place. Our calculators handle these measurements so your prints fit perfectly.
Viewing distance directly affects perceived print quality. A large print viewed from across a room needs far fewer DPI than the same size print viewed up close. The general rule is that 150 DPI is sufficient for viewing distances beyond 60cm, and 100 DPI works for large prints viewed from 1 metre or more.
