Calculation Method
- RAW size = Megapixels × 1M × (Bit depth / 8) × Compression factor
- JPEG size = Megapixels × 0.35MB (fine) or 0.2MB (normal)
- Photos = Card capacity / Average file size
- Video time = Card capacity / Bitrate (4K at 100Mbps)
- Card capacity uses the advertised decimal size (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes)

It depends on your camera and settings. A 24MP camera shooting RAW+JPEG (14-bit lossless) produces roughly 32MB per shot, fitting about 1,880 photos on a 64GB card. Shooting JPEG fine only, you get around 7,250 photos. These figures use the card’s full advertised capacity; usable space is a few percent lower after formatting.
Yes. 14-bit RAW files are about 17% larger than 12-bit files. A 24MP camera produces roughly 24MB per 14-bit lossless RAW versus about 21MB per 12-bit file. Over a full card, this difference adds up significantly.
Lossless compression reduces file size by about 40% with no quality loss. Lossy compression reduces size by about 55% with very minor quality differences that are invisible in most situations. Uncompressed RAW files are the largest.
At 4K 100Mbps, a 64GB card holds about 85 minutes of video. Higher bitrates (400Mbps for 8K or ProRes) fill cards much faster. Always carry spare cards for video work.
