Angle of View Calculator — Lens & Sensor AOV

Calculate the angle of view for any lens and sensor combination, with lens category classification.

How We Calculate This

Angle of view is calculated from sensor dimensions and focal length:

AOV Formula

AOV = 2 × arctan(dimension ÷ (2 × focal length))

Use sensor width for horizontal AOV, height for vertical, and the diagonal (√(width² + height²)) for diagonal AOV. This formula assumes a rectilinear (non-fisheye) lens focused at infinity. Example: a 50 mm lens on full frame (36 × 24 mm) gives 39.6° horizontal, 27.0° vertical and 46.8° diagonal.
