What is angle of view?

Angle of view (AOV) is the angular extent of the scene captured by the camera, measured horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. A wider AOV captures more of the scene. It depends on both focal length and sensor size. A 50mm lens on full frame has 39.6° horizontal AOV.

How does angle of view differ from field of view?

The terms are often used interchangeably, but strictly: angle of view is measured in degrees (angular measurement) and is a property of the lens-sensor combination. Field of view is the linear extent of the scene visible at a given distance (measured in metres or feet).

What angle of view do different lens types have?

On full frame: ultra-wide (14-20mm) = 94-114° diagonal; wide (24-35mm) = 63-84°; standard (40-60mm) = 40-57°; short telephoto (85-135mm) = 18-29°; telephoto (200-400mm) = 6-12°; super telephoto (500mm+) = under 5°.

Why is diagonal AOV most commonly quoted?

Diagonal AOV is the largest angle and corresponds to the full image circle of the lens. It is consistent regardless of the image aspect ratio. Manufacturers typically specify diagonal AOV in lens specifications. However, horizontal and vertical AOV are often more useful for practical composition planning.

How We Calculate This

Angle of view is calculated from sensor dimensions and focal length:

AOV Formula

AOV = 2 × arctan(dimension ÷ (2 × focal length))

Use sensor width for horizontal AOV, height for vertical, and the diagonal (√(width² + height²)) for diagonal AOV. This formula assumes a rectilinear (non-fisheye) lens focused at infinity. Example: a 50 mm lens on full frame (36 × 24 mm) gives 39.6° horizontal, 27.0° vertical and 46.8° diagonal.
