What is the golden spiral in photography?

The golden spiral (Fibonacci spiral) is a logarithmic spiral that grows by the golden ratio (1.618) with each quarter turn. When overlaid on a photograph, the spiral guides the viewer from the outer edge towards a focal point. Place your main subject at the convergence point.

How is the golden spiral different from the rule of thirds?

The rule of thirds divides the frame into equal thirds (33/66%). The golden spiral and phi grid divide at 38/62% (1/phi). The golden ratio points are slightly closer to centre than thirds intersections, which often creates a more naturally balanced composition.
