The rule of thirds simply divides image dimensions by three:
Grid Lines
Vertical lines at width/3 and 2*width/3
Horizontal lines at height/3 and 2*height/3
Power Points
The four intersections of these lines are the power points — the strongest positions for placing your subject or key elements. These positions create natural visual tension and balance.

The rule of thirds divides an image into nine equal sections using two horizontal and two vertical lines. Placing key elements along these lines or at their four intersections (called power points) creates more dynamic and visually pleasing compositions than centering the subject.
Centre composition works well for symmetrical subjects, reflections and formal portraits. Dead centre can create powerful, confrontational images. Leading lines that converge to centre, radial symmetry, and minimalist compositions often benefit from centred subjects. The rule of thirds is a guideline, not a law.
In Western cultures, the eye tends to enter an image from the top-left and scan in a Z-pattern. This makes the top-left and bottom-right power points slightly more dominant for subject placement. However, all four points create strong compositions depending on the subject and context.
Place the horizon on the top or bottom third line rather than the centre. If the sky is dramatic, place the horizon on the bottom third to show more sky. If the foreground is interesting, place it on the top third. Place key features like trees or buildings on vertical third lines.
The phi grid divides the frame in the golden ratio of 1 : 0.618 : 1 rather than into equal thirds, so its two lines fall at 0.382 and 0.618 of each dimension — closer to the centre than the rule of thirds’ 0.333 and 0.667. Many photographers find this slightly tighter framing more natural. The calculator lists both phi lines per axis alongside the rule-of-thirds grid: for a 6000px-wide image they sit at 2292px and 3708px from the left.
