Photo Merge Calculator — Final Resolution from Multiple Images
Calculate the final resolution when merging multiple images horizontally, vertically or in a grid.
How We Calculate This
This calculator estimates the final resolution from multiple stitched images:
Horizontal Merge
Final width = frame width + (columns - 1) x frame width x (1 - overlap)
Vertical Merge
Final height = frame height + (rows - 1) x frame height x (1 - overlap)
Grid Merge
Both formulas apply simultaneously for grid merges, giving final width and height independently.
Frequently Asked Questions
The merged image width equals one full frame width plus the non-overlapping portion of each additional column. For example, 3 frames at 6000px with 30% overlap: 6000 + 2 x (6000 x 0.7) = 14,400px. A small stitch-loss factor (default 0.98) is then applied for edge cropping, giving 14,112px. The same applies vertically for rows.
The Brenizer method (or bokeh panorama) uses a fast telephoto lens (85mm f/1.4) to shoot a multi-frame panorama that is then stitched together. This creates an image with the wide-angle field of view but the shallow depth of field of the telephoto lens — an effect impossible with a single exposure.
For standard panoramic stitching, 25-35% overlap works well. For the Brenizer method, use 30-50% overlap to ensure accurate stitching with the very shallow depth of field. More overlap means more frames but better stitching accuracy.
A merged TIFF from multiple RAW files can be very large. A 3-frame panorama from a 24MP camera produces roughly a 50MP file — about 300MB as a 16-bit RGB TIFF (50M pixels x 3 channels x 2 bytes), or 150MB at 8-bit. Grid merges (e.g., 3x3 from a 45MP camera) can easily exceed 1GB per merged file.
