Negative Space Calculator — Subject to Background Ratios

Calculate subject-to-background ratios for minimal compositions and understand the impact of negative space.

How We Calculate This

This calculator measures the balance between subject and negative space:

Area Calculation

Subject area = subject width × subject height

Negative space = total image area − subject area

Ratio

Ratio = negative space area / subject area

A ratio of 3:1 or higher indicates strong minimalist composition. A ratio below 1:1 means the subject dominates the frame.

The subject is approximated by its bounding box (width × height), so for an irregular or off-rectangular subject the figures here are an upper bound on subject coverage and a lower bound on the true negative space. The composition labels apply the adjustable threshold defaults shown under Advanced Options (subject dominant above 50%, balanced above 30%, minimalist above 15%).
