Panorama Calculator — Frames, Overlap & Resolution

Plan panorama shots with overlap percentage, number of frames and estimated final resolution.

How We Calculate This

This calculator plans panorama sequences based on lens FOV and overlap:

Field of View per Frame

FOV = 2 × arctan(sensor dimension ÷ (2 × focal length))

In portrait orientation the sensor’s short side (e.g. 24mm) faces horizontally, so each frame covers less angle and you need more frames.

Number of Frames

Effective step = FOV × (1 − overlap%)

Frames = ceil(total angle ÷ effective step) + buffer

The default buffer adds 1 extra frame for safety; you can change it under Advanced Options.

Final Resolution

Estimated by multiplying the non-overlapping width per frame by the number of steps, plus one full frame width.
